Ask AI

How to connect your own AI account

Connect OpenRouter in one click or paste an API key from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini and others in Settings, then choose it for Ask AI.

You connect your own AI account in Settings, under AI providers. Omne checks the account with the provider before it saves anything, so a wrong key is caught straight away and the provider's own words explain why.

Where to find it

Open Settings from your account menu and choose AI providers in the AI group. The page lists every provider as a card, grouped under Text and agents and Images, video and voice. Each card carries a tag that says how it connects: Included, Your plan, One click or API key. At the top, Your connections shows what is already connected, and What your agents use lets you choose the provider for text and for media.

Connect with one click

OpenRouter is the one-click provider. Open its card and choose the sign-in button. A window opens on OpenRouter's own sign-in, you approve Omne there, and the window closes. Omne receives a key from OpenRouter, checks it, and saves it. Because OpenRouter reaches many models through one account, this is the fastest way to get Ask AI working. There is a separate article on it: Connect OpenRouter.

Connect with an API key

For OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, xAI, Mistral, DeepSeek, Perplexity and the other key-based providers, you paste an API key.

  1. Open the provider's card in AI providers.
  2. Below the description, find the line Where to find it. It links to the page on the provider's own site where the key is made, such as the API keys page in the provider's console.
  3. Create a key there and copy it.
  4. Back in Omne, choose the button to add a key, paste it into the field, and choose Check and save.
  5. Wait for the button to finish Checking with the provider. When it succeeds, the connection appears under Connected with the last four characters of the key.

You can add more than one key for a provider with Add another key. Each can be given a name, which helps when you keep a work and a personal key side by side.

Any OpenAI-compatible provider

If your provider is not listed, or you run your own server, use the card named Any OpenAI-compatible provider. It asks for a name, a base address such as https://api.example.com/v1, and an API key, which you can leave empty if the server needs none. The address must start with https:// and must be reachable from the internet. Omne refuses addresses that point inside a private network.

Amazon Bedrock

Bedrock asks for a Bedrock API key and an AWS region such as us-east-1. Omne checks the region's format and then asks Bedrock for its model list.

What Omne does with the key

Omne seals the key on its servers and never sends it back to your browser. Removing the connection deletes the key from Omne. For OpenRouter, the key also remains in your OpenRouter account until you delete it there, and Omne tells you so when you remove the connection.

Choose which provider Ask AI uses

If you connect more than one provider, What your agents use has a picker named Provider for text and agents. Ask AI starts on that one. Inside a chat you can switch to any other connected provider or model from the model menu at the bottom of the message box, and Omne remembers your pick on that device.

If the check fails

The message under the button repeats the provider's reason, for example "OpenAI refused the key" followed by the provider's explanation. The common causes are a key copied with a space at the end, a key from the wrong product, a key whose billing is not set up, or a base address that is not reachable. Make a fresh key at the provider and paste it again. More fixes are in When a chat does not answer.

Who can add a provider Owners, admins and members can add a provider. Viewers can look at the page but cannot add or remove anything.
