Why the sign-in email button shows 'This link has run out or was already used' and how to get a fresh one.
The sign-in page shows "This link has run out or was already used." when you click the button in a sign-in email whose code can no longer be used.
Why it happens
The code behind the button works once, for 10 minutes. It is spent in any of these cases: you already typed it, you already clicked the button, you asked for a newer code, or your email program opened the link in the background to check it. Some security filters do the last.
What to do
- On the sign-in page, enter your address and click Continue.
- Wait for the new email.
- Type the six digits, or click its button once.
Typing the digits avoids the filter problem, because nothing opens a link.
An old button
Buttons from older emails point at the sign-in page with the code. They fill the six boxes and try to log you in. If the code is spent, the page shows the same message.
