How to create a short link

Paste a web address into Create link, let Omne fill in the card, choose or generate the short word, and save. Press C or paste a link anywhere on the page.

Open Store, then Links, then All links, and click Create link. Paste the address you want people to reach, and Omne fills in the rest. You can also press C, or paste a web address anywhere on the page, and the window opens with it.

Steps

  1. Under Where it goes, paste the full address, starting with https://. Omne reads the page and fills in a title, a line and a picture for the share card. Anything you typed yourself is never overwritten.
  2. Under Short link, look at the address. The part after the slash is the word. Omne makes a random seven-character one for you. Click the dice button to make another, or type your own. Spaces become dashes, and capitals become lowercase.
  3. Optionally add Tags with Pick or type a tag. See manage your links.
  4. Check the QR code and the share card on the right. See QR codes and the share card.
  5. Optionally click UTM or Expiration at the bottom. See UTM parameters and link expiration.
  6. Click Create link, or press Command or Control and Enter.

Copy the new address from the copy button on its row.

What a word can be

A word is lowercase letters, digits and dashes, up to 64 characters, and it has to start and end with a letter or digit. Some words are kept by Omne and refused, for example words that would look like Omne's own pages. If a word is refused, Omne says "That word is kept by Omne." and you choose another.

The address has to start with https:// or http:// and lead to a public website. Omne refuses:

  • an address with a password in it,
  • a private address, such as one on your own network,
  • a short link on the same domain, and
  • sites that Omne doesn't allow on short links.

If it won't save

  • "Where it goes starts with https://." means the address is missing its start.
  • "Pick your link name first, at the top of the page." means you have no link name yet. See your link name and address.

More fixes are in links troubleshooting.
