Library

Docs, cards and tables

How to write in the Library: what separates a doc from a card and a table, how the editor behaves, and the ways to open one.

A doc is a full page you write in, a card is a short note, and a table is a grid of rows and columns. All three open in the same editor and save as you type, so there is no save button to press.

Make one

From the Library, press New and pick Create a document, Create a card or Create a table. The shortcuts on the Library page are D, C and Shift+T. The sidebar's New menu has New document, New card and New board, and its Capture row makes a card at once. The new item opens straight away.

Write in the editor

Give the item a title at the top, then write below it. Start a line with # to make a heading, and the headings feed the outline. Type / on an empty line to insert something other than text. The slash menu offers:

ChoiceWhat it adds
Voice noteA recorder, though recordings aren't kept yet (see uploading files and voice notes)
TableA new table of the Library's own, linked into the doc
SoundA sound you pick from a list of sounds
Discover postA link to a post from Discover
Library itemA link to another item in your Library, or its picture if it is a picture

At the bottom of the page, the small Outline button lists the doc's headings and jumps to the one you click. The AI button next to it can open the doc in an AI app, and beside both you see a word count and an estimated reading time.

Open it where you want it

In the More menu, under Open, you choose how a doc shows up: In the frame takes the page, In a pane puts it beside the page you were on, As a popup floats it, and Take over fills the window. The choice is part of the address, so Back and Forward move between the doc and the Library, and reloading reopens it.

Full width in the same menu stretches the text across the page. Properties shows the item's details, and a cover and icon can be set at the top of the doc.

Tables

A table opens as a grid. Add property adds a column, and each column has a type: text, number, select, multi-select, date, person, URL, checkbox or post. A Post column holds a Library post and can show its views, likes, comments, followers, outlier score or posted date as read-only columns. A table holds up to 50 columns and 5,000 rows.

You can sort, filter and group, hide properties, wrap text, and save these choices as named views. The toolbar can also add rows from links you paste or from your saved Discover posts, and Export CSV and Import a CSV are in the table's More menu. Only people who can edit the workspace can change a table or save its views.

Cards

A card is the same editor for something short. Cards are also what books and podcast episodes become when they arrive from Readwise, Kindle or Snipd: the card is the book, and its highlights are listed under it.

Email into a doc A forwarded email arrives as a doc, with its sender kept and its original design available to look at. See save emails to the Library.
